From the South Wales Voice 18th May 1946:-
MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES
Mr and Mrs William Matthias, 27 Heol Varteg, this week received intimation from the Air Ministry that their son, the late Flying Officer W B (Bertie) Matthias, RAF, was mentioned in despatches for distinguished services on 8th June 1944. It will be recalled that Flying Officer Mathias was reported missing in 1943, during operations in the Mediterranean and after an adventurous week of hiding on a small island, escaped from the Germans in a small boat, being eventually picked up by an Allied war vessel. It was in March 1944, during operational flying in the same theatre of war that he again was reported missing and this time presumed to have lost his life.
