From the South Wales Voice newspaper, 27th November 1943 came news of his death:-

YSTALYFERA SOLDIER DIES IN HOSPITAL
The sad news was received on Monday of the death in a military hospital in Italy of Lance-Bombardier Robert John Purser, son of Mr Jack Purser, Spencer Terrace, Lower Cwmtwrch and the late Mrs Purser and son in law of Mr and Mrs T. S. Hicks 57, Alltygrug Road, Ystalyfera. It is stated that death was due to multiple burns.
Lance Bombardier Purser, who was 37, was called up for the Forces in December 1940 and went overseas in the following March. His unit was the first to land in Italy. Prior to being called up he was employed by Mr C.F. Hunt of Hunts Stores.
Sympathy is extended to the widow and two sons Derek aged eight and Vivian aged seven and the respective families in their tragic loss.
